Use of Modeling in Solving Mathematical Problems in the Moroccan Educational System

Abstract

This article explores the dynamics of teaching and learning mathematical modeling in the first year of qualifying secondary education in the Moroccan educational context. This study focuses on the mathematical concept of "systems of equations" and seeks to identify the difficulties students encounter when modeling extra-mathematical problems. To achieve this, the analysis examines student responses to two types of problem situations: one of a classical nature and the other involving implicit unknown variables. By evaluating these responses, the objective is to identify specific obstacles students face in the modeling process. The findings revealed that rather than independently developing and applying mathematical models, students often limit themselves to adapting and manipulating pre-existing models. This indicates a gap in students’ abilities to create and use models for solving real-life problems, highlighting a crucial aspect that needs to be addressed in current pedagogical methods. This study underscores the importance of improving educational approaches to enhance students’ modeling skills to enhance their overall mathematical competence and ability to tackle real-life issues.
